Prince of Persia
Rating: Didn’t Suck
With Jake Gyllenhaal as the lead in a story of a Kazikame master, sword fighting skilled warrior battling the power of the gods… I think we all figured this movie was going to royally suck. Surprisingly, it wasn’t completely awful. Not to mention, when you consider the fact that this movie is based on a video game, it really earns some extra points. Mortal Kombat, Max Payne, Mortal Kombat 2, Street Fighter… let’s just say video-game-to-movie projects are pretty much doomed from the start. So, for this movie to be good enough that you can sit through it, and maybe have a few moments of pleasure, I’d have to say that’s pretty cool.
Is it worth spending money on? Well…. Hmmmm…. If you liked Pirates of the Caribbean, The Mummy (Brendan Fraser) Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, The Scorpion King and movies with that sort of panic, goofy, action packed silliness, then I think you will enjoy this movie enough to spend a full 8 bucks on it. If, however, you walked out of some of these movies disappointed, and some pleased, then I’d say just go to see it in a matinee or dirtmall discount theater setting. Anyone else, probably not a good idea to spend any money on it. Netflix it if you’re curious.
What you’ll like:
-Again, it’s a video game adaptation that’s not a complete disgrace of a movie
-Pretty cool fight scenes, not great, but good enough
-They spent a good amount on the special effects, which were pretty entertaining, and the film quality was pretty good too
-The chick in it is hot, not sure if I’ve seen her in anything else, I want to though
-Jake’s not a complete wuss-bag like you’d expect
-A story that ties up enough loose ends you don’t feel annoyed at the end
-Characters that you kind of care about
What you may not like:
-Goofy, campy feel to the whole film
-The actors weren’t trained enough so all of the moves are sort of lagging and a tad bit slow
-The Kazikame (ya remember how the guy jumped around all over the place like a monkey in “Live Free or Die Hard”? That’s Kazikame, it started out as a sport that some French kids would flip and climb all over actual buildings and what not in france and now it’s getting into films more and more) is pretty lame, really they should have just cut to a stunt double who actually knew what he was doing. Most of what Gyllenhaal does is just hop on things, maybe he did like two flips, it was pretty lame
-Some felt that the two leads had great chemistry, I thought it was very forced and far from genuine, it felt like each was simply waiting for the other to finish so they could say their next line, they weren’t truly reacting to each other, not until the very very end and even that wasn’t all that great
-Stolen scenes, speaking of Indiana Jones, remember the one where he has to walk across the floor, but he can only stand on the proper symbols or the floor will fall away? Yeah, they totally copied that in this movie. Lame.
-I’m sure there’s other stuff, but you get the picture.
So, I don’t know, if you’re like me, don’t bother spending money on the movie, if you like the movies I mentioned earlier, then definitely check it out, you’re going to have a lot of fun. Regardless of what you think, I doubt the DVD’s gonna be worth more than 15 bucks to you. I’m still against blu-ray, for the amount of crap you need just to enjoy the benefits, and then on top of that pay more for the dics, it just doesn’t add up to being THAT much better quality that it’s worth it. So far there’s still plenty of new titles coming out on DVD, so it’d be interesting to see if in this economy they try to phase them out. Who knows.
Anyway, let me know what you thought,
